The opening of GSLC seven years ago

was the beginning of a great story about helping and sharing with every person involved in the project. Indeed, we currently welcome 180 Burmese children, between 5 and 17 years old. We try to give them a chance for a better life.

Their families left Myanmar to run away from economic problems and military persecution. Consequently, many Burmese people came to Thailand because of the close proximity and job opportunities. However, when they arrived in Thailand the children couldn't go to Thai school because they didn't understand Thai and because of their legal situation.

One of the goals of our Centre is to provide them with basic education and teach them three languages: Burmese, Thai and English. Since 2016, we have followed the Burmese curriculum (Mathematics, Science, History, etc.) which allows the children to get Burmese certifications and to integrate easily into Burmese schools should they return to Myanmar.

There are in fact more than 200,000 Burmese migrants currently living and working in Phuket under very poor conditions. As they have unstable jobs and salaries and most of them are undocumented, they are marginalized.

Unfortunately, the only jobs they can get are unstable and provide very low wages (fishermen, workers at the fishing port and fishing factory, cleaners, carriers, construction workers, etc.). These jobs are very hard and accidents are frequent which can lead to deaths. The wages the families earn are too low to cover their expenses considering that they often have to send money to their relatives in Myanmar. They are often in debt from their journey to Phuket or from purchasing their legal documents.

The situation the parents are in affects the children. In our Centre, many students have to work after school or, skip school on some days, to help their families.

Migrants suffer from a lack of healthcare services when they are undocumented. Our Centre provides community nursing and health counselling to 5 Burmese communities in Phuket.
